J&S Knock Sensor Question

Hi all, I was going to install my J&S unit this weekend and I had a question about the knock sensor. How exactly does this detect pinging from each individual cylinder? From what I seen, it looks like an adapter that goes into the block, and then the knock sensor screws into the adapter. The only thing I could think about is that it somehow senses the engine vibrations. If that's how it's done, how does the unit interpret the vibration signal that the sensor sends back and know which(if any) cylinder is indeed pinging? Thanks.

The J&S listens for a certain type of frequency. If it hears it will pull out timing until it disappears. Get ready to have a lot of timing pulled out at throttle tip in. I never realized how much detonation I was getting until I installed the J&S monitor w/ air/fuel meter.

i was told that it is a Saturn knock sensor, yes, a knock sensor from a Saturn.the guy at J & S electronics told me its like a microphone and attaches to the back of the block and it will hear the detonation and retard the timing. see-ya

It uses a knock sensor to determine when detonation is happening.

Then it uses a Motorolla chip to find out which cylinder was being fired right when the "knock" occured and uses this info to keep track of where detonation is occuring and how much timing to take out of each cylinder until the knock subsides.

The J&S uses a GM knock sensor.

Actually after talking to J&S a while back the original units used the GM sensor but the new unit's now in production are using a Saturn sensor.

Am I mistaken, but I thought that Saturn was made by GM, so that way, it's a GM sensor no matter what right?

Im not sure who makes the sensor for GM or Saturn.

They are 2 different sensors with different specs.
